Lebanese designer, Elie Saab, experienced in couture and luxury fashion, presented yestarday his latest collection AW 2013-2014 at Paris Fashion Week. Mostly daywear, the collection had a regimental feel in navy and black. For evening, added colors like teal blue, violet, and chartreuse yellow to his lineup of white and black, and, as is his custom, laying on the sequins and beads.
Saab was a self-taught fashion student from the age of nine, after starting to sew and create clothes for his sisters, and producing garments that were sold to the women of his neighborho“My parents wanted me to become either a lawyer or a doctor, the classical desirable career for a man, but then they realised I was determined.” It is exactly that determination that led Saab to take to Paris to study fashion in 1981 and return a year later at 18 to launch his own couture atelier based in Beirut, managing just over twelve employees.
In 2002 Saab became more widely recognized than ever before after Halle Berry wore a net and embroidery topped burgundy Saab gown to the Academy Awards, where she won ‘Best Actress’. Since then Berry has chosen Saab for other red carpet appearances such as the 13th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards and the 2003 Academy Awards. May 2003 Saab received an invitation to become a correspondent member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, and a month later Saab showed his first Ready-to-Wear collection in Paris, the city that would later become his permanent Ready-to-Wear runway.
