Until the late 19th century, women preferred to wear capes, instead of wearing coats. This was because the clothes worn then was difficult to wear under a coat. However, the sports activities, became more popular, day dresses became more popular and less bulky, so that women can wear them. The newspapers of the early 20th century were full of advertisements for practical yet elegant coats. The suppliers of this new type of garment recorded a steadily growing demand, and coat departments in large stores became increasingly important.
Because the ladies’ coat developed relatively late and was therefore unable to fall back on traditional examples, its designers turned to the classics in men’s fashion for inspiration, at least as far as daywear was concerned. Consequently a woman’s wardrobe may contain a number of well known, traditional designs with this inspiration, ranging from the chesterfield coat with velvet collar to the sporty polo coat with patch pockets, in the other hand, fashion designers created very feminine silhouettes for evening wear, and the fashion for fur developed its own interpretation of the coat.
In our days, the winter coats are the key fashion trend of the season. With a fitted silhouette and a mantle coat, coat in a form of a bell and a trapezium are very popular. Also the middle of the knee and midi coats lengh are feminine and chic , but don’t forget about long models to the floor which are actual, though they are not so practical.
In accordance to the main trends, the color palette of women’s coats of fall/winter 2012-2013 is made of subdued and bright colors and details of natural palette. But do not forget about black, white and contrasts: color blocks and black and white combinations are also relevant.
