Since the ’20s and the ’30s brought us so many styles in clothing, i decided to dedicate a new article to the years that have changed the course of the fashion.
Today i want to bring to your attention, another great designer of those years, MADELEINE VIONNET.
Those who have ever heard of or seen anything by Vionnet will probably still appreciate her influence in the fashion world, as many today’s dresses, skirts or blouses might look completely different if she hadn’t come along and if you didn’t, there is always a beginning.
In the 1920’s, both french designers, Coco Chanel and Madeleine Vionnet played important roles in fashion, especially that the female designers were the most influential.Vionnet was an architect of fashion with her technique of cutting garments from geometrically patterned fabric with a superb sense of construction, bringing a lot of innovations in dressmaking. Being deep interested in Japanese art, she created a dress constructed from a single piece, inspired by Japanese Kimono. However, Madeleine Vionnet’s inventive clothes were cut on the bias from the shoulders and hips using heavy satin and crepe, giving them a fluid and perfectly sculpted look.
Although the fabrics she used for the dresses were unusual in women’s fashion in those years, a lot of stars of that decade(Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich) and women wore her creations, because they had a timeless grace and amazing details.
If my article made you to desire to wear an evening gown or just a dress, never forget that “The dress must not hang on the body but follow its lines. It must accompany its wearer and when a woman smiles the dress must smile with her.” by Madeleine Vionnet.
